Coming Together With Cleveland Clinic to Educate Providers on the Role of Behavioral Medicine in Reducing Opioid Use

The France Foundation (TFF) and Cleveland Clinic have developed “The Role of Behavioral Medicine in Reducing Opioid Use,” a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program for physicians, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers involved in the management of patients experiencing chronic pain.

This initiative aims to immerse learners in the key concepts of pain management by demonstrating ways to use a range of therapeutic options for managing pain, including nonpharmacologic approaches and pharmacologic therapies, with a focus on the inclusion of behavioral therapy.

Expert faculty from Cleveland Clinic—Robert Bales, MD, Richard W. Rosenquist, MD, Pavan Tankha, DO, and Amy Zack, MD—provide guidance on assessing patients with pain, including patients experiencing mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. They also offer insight on identifying potential risk factors for opioid use disorder and who could benefit from behavioral health services.

Participants learn not only how to integrate opioid analgesics into pain treatment plans individualized to meet the needs of their patients, but also how to manage patients on opioid analgesics safely and effectively in acute and chronic pain settings. This course also provides insights on how to counsel patients and caregivers through the safe use of opioid analgesics using behavioral medicine approaches and referring patients to a pain specialist when appropriate.

Educating learners about government regulations on safely treating pain and prescribing opioids is made possible through ArcheMedX’s adaptive learning platform. If you’re interested in reducing opioid use in patients through behavioral medicine, begin the module on ArcheMedX:
