COURSE DESCRIPTION
Atopic dermatitis can affect anyone. Although more common in pediatric patients, adults can also experience AD—sometimes as a new onset disorder. The itching and pain can be associated with significant stigma and psychosocial distress leading to significant psychiatric complications such as anxiety and depression. Impact on development and QoL can be substantial. AD is overwhelmingly first seen, diagnosed, and managed in primary care, and as such, PAs (physician assistants) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) play an important role in the management of AD. In this activity, adaptive learning is utilized to engage the learner in the educational activity and help improve the overall knowledge and confidence in busy PAs and NPs in treating patients with AD.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to:

• Develop a management strategy for AD taking into account patient quality of life considerations
• Manage AD as a chronic, persistent disease that changes over the lifespan
• Review new and emerging therapeutic options for the management of AD in all age groups

This activity is intended for PAs and NPs involved in the care of patients with atopic dermatitis.

STATEMENT OF NEED
Atopic dermatitis is overwhelmingly first seen, diagnosed, and managed in primary care where physician assistants (PAs) play an important role in the management of AD, particularly with regard to patient education regarding their own self-care, which is central to the effective management of AD. This education is critical, as guidelines are very dated (2014) and do not capture all of the presently recommended agents and their indications for the management of AD. More specifically, PAs as well as NPs do not focus enough on quality of life and psychological aspects of AD; often perceive AD as a benign, remitting disease instead of a chronic, persisting disease; and may be unaware of all of the approved therapies for AD in all age groups.
